The Best Tax Software Available (with a warning),
I have been using Turbo Tax for about 10 years. In general it is an easy to use program and I have never been audited. I only enter legitimate data that I have a receipt for. If I was to be audited it wouldn’t be a big deal.
6 years ago I had gone through the process of filling out all my forms but neglected to save the data prior to entering the E file area of the program. When I saw the state fee for E file, I tried to back out of the E file program section. All of my data prior to my last save was lost. This was about 6 hours of work. I know it was my fault for not saving my data, but I thought that the E file was included in the price of the program. I felt the program should require you to save the data prior to entering a section where the data would be lost if you backed out of the E file section. I called Intuit to let them know what happened and found the response to my issue underwhelming.
The Federal E file is free but the states may charge additional fee of about $20 to E file.
The next year I used an accountant which turned out to be a big mistake. It cost several times the price of the software package and all of my carryover deductions needed to be manually entered. I spent more time putting my information together for the accountant than I had spent in previous years doing the return myself. The accountant just made the deadline and repeatedly called asking for clarifications on deductions.
I learned my lesson from that experience. Now I always use Turbo Tax Home and Business but make sure I save my data throughout the entry process.
I’d give the product 4.5 stars if I could. I find the statement of E file to be slightly deceptive. The state filing is not included in the price the program. Intuit is much clearer about this now than they use to be. You just need to be aware of this and include that cost in your purchase decision. I print and file my state return to avoid the fee. There are also areas of the business deductions that require research from the IRS’s website which can be tedious.
The program allows business deductions carry over to future years which save a lot of time and helps maintain accuracy. If you are going to use this program it pays to be a repeat user.

|TurboTax H&B,
Program has been easy to use for many years and has saved time and money. Might shop around next year though as the price varies substantially from retailer to retailer.

|Best way to do your taxes,
I have been using TurboTax to complete my tax returns since the early 1990s. I have looked at other methods and other software several times over the years and I keep coming back to TurboTax.
I have been a beta tester for TurboTax several times over the years, including the current (2011) version. This years version continues the TurboTax tradition of excellent software.
Novice and experienced users can both use the software to complete their tax returns as efficiently as possible. The software guide you to determine what forms need to be completed based your specific situation. It will also scan for errors and notify you if you are missing information on any of the multiple forms. Intuit provides updates to the software throughout tax season to ensure you have the most up to date information.
I would and do recomend TurboTax software to anyone interested in completing their own tax returns.
Mike

|More of the Same from QuickBooks,
Despite all of the hoopla surrounding each new version, this version offers nothing new to 99.9% of users. As a CPA I have helped clients with QuickBooks for over 15 years and during that time I have seen a steady erosion in the usefulness of the program. It is large and cumbersome and much slower than older versions. My experience with the maker, Intuit is that they are not really a software company as much as they are a marketing company, using what once was a great product to squeeze more revenue out of their customers. It’s still is a decent product, but don’t upgrade unless you absolutely have to. If you are a new user, examine other products before you commit yourself to this once great and now mediocre product.

Do not like it,
I have been using QuickBooks for years. It was great years ago. However with every upgrade the system gets more bogged down with useless features planted in the software for the purpose of sucking more and more money out of you. It is a good thing to offer a needed product, run a successful business, hire employees and support the community in general. But, it is my opinion that Intuit is run by greedy SOB’s. The tech support is poor and not really friendly at that, The latest version is slow, Locks up often (not just me, many complaints about this)
Look elsewhere for your business software.

We have made significant changes to the product in 2012, including eliminating unnecessary interruptions to present other products. We have added features customers were asking for, like the calendar feature, and they have been extremely well received. We appreciate customer feedback on how we are doing and hope that if you need help with anything in the future, your experience will be a positive one.
Customer service,
I have been experiencing a re-occurring problem with Quickbooks 2010 for the last six months. It is hard to understand the technicians at the other end of the phone, the response time has been reasonable, but it takes so long for them to fix the thing. My biggest concern is that the first thing the technician does is try to sell you a service contract. Four times I had to tell him I am a simplistic user, have been using it for 20 years and not needed a service contract yet. Still they kept trying to get me to buy the contract. Then they try and sell me the 2012 version which they say has fixed this problem. They want to sell this to me at a discount–which is $50 higher than the Amazon price. I suggest to them the reason for the problem is that there is an issue with the software (since they eliminated the problem in 2012) and I am told it is my machine. This is a money grubbing company that doesn’t care about its customers. After reading the comments here I will not upgrade since it is likely that I will experience other problems.
